Impact damage tolerance and residual performance of novel interlocked-hybrid structural joints

Novel techniques for joining thermoplastic composites and aluminium alloys are critical underpinning the development of crashworthy lightweight multi-material automotive structures. Lap bonding interfaces represent a fundamental joint in typical This study investigates crashworthiness single-lap, adhesively bonded interlocked-hybrid composite-metal joints using low-velocity transverse impact tests post-impact tensile tests. For more practical estimation performance structural as an alternative to widely employed test methods literature, viz., fully-supported overlap unsupported overlap, this work proposes new testing method, employing partially-supported overlap. Single-lap, baseline adhesive (BAJs) interlocking (IAJs) were impacted at different energy levels on both facets, i.e., one set surface another composite surface. Overall, similar absorbed levels, IAJs suffer less damage than BAJs. BAJs, results better residual relative After 10 J impact, respectively present up 114% 16-times higher lap-shear strength (LSS) work-to-failure (WF) Post 12.5 surface, exhibit 100% 75% retention LSS WF, respectively.
